Wellington International Airport is an international airport located in the capital city of New Zealand. Wellington is the second busiest airport in New Zealand, having handled over 6 million passengers to date as at June 2022.

Because of its location, parking space is at a premium. The airport comprises a small restricted 110-hectare (270-acre) site meaning that every parking space on site must be used to its absolute maximum – thus the need for indoor parking guidance technology, at the minimum.

The major issue that Wellington International Airport was facing was congestion. If there is one thing that Frogparking understands, it is this major challenge when it comes to transportation and the mobility of people. Likewise, how smart parking solutions are needed to ensure parking facilities are operating well. Frogparking were excited to design and deliver a custom-made parking management solution for Wellington International Airport.

Initially, Frogparking focused on installing superior indoor parking guidance technology.

Our automated parking system consisted of an impressive 908 LiDAR indoor parking sensors to seamlessly link into our FrogGuidance system. Furthermore, this parking system linked into our dynamic wayfinding directional signage (FrogSigns).

This transformed their brand new, covered, multi-story parking structure into a future-focused and innovative parking lot. It look their ‘executive parking’ option, from being a desired location, to a high-value parking lot for the airport. Offering a premium experience with parking guidance was, and still is, absolutely critical to Wellington International Airport’s transportation team.

Next up, Frogparking tackled their outdoor parking congestion issue.

Particularly, across Wellington Airports P120 Express Parking lot. This is an uncovered short-term parking lot designed to cater to pick-ups or drop-offs.

It is traditionally a high turnover area. A key parking challenge for the airport was congestion due to over-stayers, as well as utilization rates. In essence, drivers were unsure what parking was actually available.  Parking revenue optimization was another key driver in looking into a new parking system.

We installed surface-mounted parking sensors, FrogSensor, that integrated with more FrogSigns to reduce vehicle cruising times.

The results?

The installation of a superior parking guidance technology in both the outdoor parking areas, as well as their indoor multi story parking structure.

Within a few short months, Wellington Airport’s data showed it was 53% faster to find a carpark since Frogparking installed their smart parking system. Not to mention an overall reduction of cruise times by a whopping 27%. This has resulted in superior parking congestion-management outcomes for Wellington airport.
